Google AI Overview Hits 1 Billion Users Monthly in 100+ Countries, Holds 90% Market Share—EU Access Still Pending

Google's AI Overviews, the new search engine feature launched in May 2024, has rapidly gained global adoption by providing AI-generated summaries of search results with organized information.

The feature received widespread positive user feedback for its ability to deliver quick, structured summaries while integrating direct links to source materials, making information verification seamless.

Following its initial launch in the United States in May 2024, Google systematically expanded AI Overviews to key markets including Mexico, Brazil, India, Indonesia, Japan, and the United Kingdom, offering support in their respective local languages. 

According to Google's projections following this expansion, AI Overview's user base would exceed one billion monthly active users globally, with users able to access the feature in any supported language regardless of their location.

According to Google's projections following this expansion, AI Overview's user base would exceed one billion monthly active users globally, with users able to access the feature in any supported language regardless of their location. 

Google continues to enhance the feature with technical improvements, including the integration of source links directly within AI-generated text and clear differentiation between organic and sponsored content, with mobile ad integration already available for relevant queries in the USA.

As the dominant search engine commanding approximately 90% of global market share, Google's position strengthened further with AI Overviews, outpacing competitors like Microsoft Bing which holds over 4% market share despite its early 2023 OpenAI integration. 

While the feature remains unavailable across European Union member countries, AI Overviews has achieved extensive coverage across the Americas, Asia-Pacific, Oceania, parts of Europe including the UK, Africa, and various regions of the Middle East, spanning over 100 nations.

AI Overviews streamlines information access by providing organized summaries at the top of search results, with clear source attribution and additional resources for users to explore topics in greater depth.
