Meta Platforms is developing an AI-powered search engine to reduce its dependency on Google and Microsoft's Bing, marking a significant shift in its strategy to become more self-reliant in search capabilities.

The new search engine will leverage AI technology to provide comprehensive summaries of current events through Meta's chatbot ecosystem, integrating across WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook platforms.

A dedicated engineering team at Meta has been working for approximately eight months to build a robust information database for their chatbot, focusing on creating a comprehensive web crawler system.

Meta has established a multi-year partnership with Reuters news agency, enabling their chatbot to provide real-time answers to users' questions about news and current events, while also integrating location data that could compete with Google Maps.

Google is actively integrating its most advanced AI model, Gemini, into core products including Search, aiming to transform traditional search into more intuitive and conversational experiences.
