Google AI Overview.

The feedback that Google is receiving from its users regarding AI Overviews is very positive, so much so that the tech company has decided it’s time to expand access to this search technology to more than a hundred countries and new languages.

AI Overviews were launched in May 2024 in the USA in English, and in August, they began to be implemented in Mexico as well as Brazil, India, Indonesia, Japan, and the United Kingdom, also in their local languages. On October 28, 2024, Google took a major leap in the evolution of its search tool by launching “AI-Generated Overview” in more than 100 countries, representing the most significant expansion to date.

Language and User Access

Another relevant development that Google has announced is that people with access to AI Overview will be able to use it in any of the currently supported languages by the AI tool, regardless of the country they are in. For example, a US user who speaks Japanese will be able to view AI Overview results in that language. Google states that, following this new expansion, AI Overview will have more than 1 billion users globally each month.

Technical Implementation

Google has been improving the way it presents links to the source of each piece of information that makes up the previews generated with AI Overview. At the beginning of the month, it presented a new update in this regard by starting to integrate links directly into the text created by AI. Additionally, advertisements will continue to be displayed in a clearly differentiated way and in specific locations, so that users are aware of what is organic content and what is sponsored content. Likewise, in the USA, ads in AI Overviews are already available on mobile devices for relevant queries.

Market Position

Google’s search engine is the most used in the world, taking nearly 90% of the market share. Behind it is Microsoft Bing, which reached over 4%, but began to gain more attention after implementing OpenAI’s AI with the update in early 2023.

Implementation Example in Colombia Although it’s not yet common, there are already instances where Google presents AI-generated results in certain searches. In the desktop version, we can observe that the AI-generated overview appears as the first search result. To its right, two URLs are presented that allow users to expand their search, and right below, another URL is shown, in this case from the National Civil Registry. Meanwhile, this is how it looks in the mobile version. Enclosed in small circles are the two pages that appear in the desktop version. At the bottom of the result, there’s a ‘See more’ button. When clicking this button, the two mentioned pages are shown, and at the bottom in position zero, the registry result appears.

What is AI-Generated Overview? “AI Overviews” is a new Google feature that uses artificial intelligence to provide quick and organized summaries of information in search results. This tool allows users to get immediate answers about a specific topic, in addition to providing links to additional resources to delve deeper into the subject.
