Nintendo revealed its next-generation gaming console through a two-minute video on January 16, 2025, showing off the Nintendo Switch 2 that’s coming in 2025. The new device keeps what made the original Switch popular – the ability to play both on TV and on the go – while making some important changes.

“We believe that meeting customer demand is the most important thing,” said Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa, addressing concerns about availability when the console launches. The company plans to make 20 million units in the first year, more than the 15 million original Switch consoles sold at launch.

The most visible changes are a bigger screen with smaller borders and new controllers that snap on magnetically instead of sliding into place. These controllers, called Joy-Cons, are larger in size. They include a mysterious new “C” button, though Nintendo hasn’t explained what it does yet.
