Apple expands the power of iCloud

A major iCloud outage disrupted multiple Apple services for nearly five hours on June 24, 2025, leaving many users unable to access their emails, photos, and other important data stored in Apple’s cloud.

The problems started around 2:36 PM ET when Apple’s System Status page first reported issues with iCloud Web Apps and iWork for iCloud. As the afternoon progressed, the outage spread to affect more services including iCloud Mail, Photos, Find My, iCloud Account & Sign In, iCloud Storage Upgrades, iCloud Calendar, and iCloud Contacts.

User complaints surged on Down Detector, peaking at around 900-1000 reports. Many took to social media to express their frustration. “iCloud is down???????” became a common refrain on X (formerly Twitter), while Reddit threads filled with users sharing their specific problems.

“Text messages I get on the iPhone do not show up in the message app on the MacBook since early morning,” one Reddit user reported, highlighting how the outage disrupted the sync between Apple devices.

The outage affected both the web version of iCloud (iCloud.com) and various iCloud-dependent functions on iPhones, iPads, and Macs. Some users reported seeing “Connection Error” messages when trying to access iCloud.com, while others found their Photos app wasn’t syncing properly between devices.

Apple’s only public acknowledgment of the problem came through updates on its System Status page. Initially, the company labeled some services as having “outages” (iCloud Web Apps, iWork for iCloud) and others as having “issues” (Mail, Photos, etc.).

After approximately five hours, at around 7:00 PM ET, Apple’s System Status page turned entirely green, indicating all services had been restored. However, the company provided no explanation for what caused the outage or any details about the fix.

What to do if you’re still experiencing issues

If you’re still having trouble with iCloud services even though Apple says the problems are resolved, here are some steps you can take:

  1. Sign out and sign back in to iCloud on your devices. This often helps refresh connections after service disruptions.
  2. Restart your devices completely. This can clear temporary glitches that might persist after the broader outage is fixed.
  3. Check your internet connection, as local connectivity issues might be confused with service outages.
  4. For persistent problems with specific services like Mail or Photos, try disabling and re-enabling those specific services in your iCloud settings.
  5. If issues continue, contact Apple Support for assistance.

The outage serves as a reminder of our increasing dependence on cloud services and the disruption that can occur when they fail. For critical data, keeping backup copies outside of any single cloud service can provide protection against future outages.

By monitoring Apple’s System Status page during future outages, users can quickly determine whether problems they’re experiencing are local or part of a wider service disruption, potentially saving hours of troubleshooting frustration.

Apple has not provided any explanation for what caused this outage, maintaining its characteristic silence about the technical details behind such incidents.
