Meta is expanding its smart glasses lineup with a new Oakley partnership, targeting athletes and sports fans with enhanced features. The Oakley Meta HSTN glasses, announced on June 20, 2025, represent Meta’s first venture into performance-focused AI eyewear.
The new Oakley Meta HSTN glasses bring significant upgrades over the previous Ray-Ban Meta models. Most notably, they feature Ultra HD 3K video recording at 2880 x 1620 pixels, a major improvement from the 1080p resolution in Ray-Ban’s version.
Battery life has also been doubled, with the Oakley glasses lasting up to eight hours of typical use and 19 hours on standby. The included charging case provides up to 48 hours of additional power, and a quick 20-minute charge delivers 50% battery life.
“This is our first step into the performance category,” said Alex Himel, Meta’s head of wearables. “There’s more to come.”
Unlike the lifestyle-focused Ray-Ban models, the Oakley version aims at active users with an IPX4 water resistance rating, making them suitable for sports and light rain. The glasses come equipped with Oakley’s PRIZM lens technology, designed to enhance color, contrast, and clarity for various sports environments.
Meta is promoting these new glasses with prominent athletes, including World Cup winner Kylian Mbappé and three-time Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes. In promotional materials, former NBA player J.R. Smith demonstrates asking about wind conditions while golfing—highlighting the hands-free functionality for athletes.
The limited-edition gold Oakley Meta HSTN will cost $499 and will be available for preorder starting July 11. Other models will start at $399 and release “later this summer.” The glasses will initially launch in 15 countries, including the US, Canada, UK, and several European nations, with plans to expand to Mexico, India, and the United Arab Emirates later in 2025.
Like their Ray-Ban predecessors, the Oakley glasses include open-ear speakers and microphones for music, podcasts, calls, and interacting with Meta AI. Users can take hands-free videos, get answers to questions, and even receive language translations through the built-in assistant.
This release follows the success of Ray-Ban Meta glasses, which have sold millions of units since their 2023 launch. Francesco Milleri, CEO of EssilorLuxottica (parent company of both Oakley and Ray-Ban), stated in February that the company aims to increase annual production to 10 million units by the end of 2026.
