Microsoft just changed how people can use advanced AI. The company added OpenAI’s O1 reasoning model to Copilot, making it free for everyone. Until now, using this technology cost $200 per month through ChatGPT Plus.
“I’m genuinely so excited that our tens of millions of users are all getting this opportunity,” says Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman. This means anyone with a Microsoft account can now use these advanced features for tasks like planning trips, solving problems, or getting detailed advice.
The new feature, called “Think Deeper,” works differently from regular Copilot. When you click the Think Deeper button, it takes about 30 seconds to answer your question. This extra time helps it think through problems more carefully, like having a conversation with someone who really considers their answer before speaking.

What makes this special is how it remembers things. The standard Copilot models tend to forget quickly, while Think Deeper keeps track of what you request and maintains context throughout your conversation. For example, if you’re planning a home renovation, you won’t need to repeat your budget or room size in every question.
In real-world tests, Think Deeper showed what it can do. When asked about planning a trip to London, it provided detailed suggestions, including attractions, accommodations, and transportation tips. For someone renovating a bedroom, it offered ideas about paint colors, lighting, furniture, and even suggested cost-free changes.
The technology isn’t perfect. It only knows information up to October 2023, so it can’t help with current events. But it’s particularly good at tasks that need careful thinking, like comparing options or planning projects. Microsoft is also working on letting Think Deeper search the internet, which would make it even more helpful.
Getting started is simple. You can use Think Deeper through the Copilot app on Windows or by visiting copilot.microsoft.com. Just sign in with a Microsoft account and look for the Think Deeper toggle switch before asking your question.
This move by Microsoft means more people can use advanced AI for everyday tasks. Whether it’s planning a vacation, getting help with work projects, or solving complex problems, tools that were once too expensive for most people are now available at no cost.
OpenAI has already announced an even more advanced model called O3, which uses something they call a “private chain of thought.” But for now, Microsoft’s decision to make O1 free through Copilot means more people can benefit from AI technology that was previously out of reach.
