Apple’s AirPods Max 2 Arrive with H2 Chip, Stronger ANC and Live Translation
Apple announced the AirPods Max 2 on March 16, 2026, bringing its H2 chip to the over-ear lineup for the first time. The upgrade delivers Active Noise Cancellation that is up to 1.5× more effective than the original AirPods Max, 24-bit 48 kHz lossless audio over USB-C, and nine intelligent features — including Live Translation powered by Apple Intelligence — that were absent from the previous generation. The headphones keep the same iconic design and the same $549 US price. Orders open March 25, with availability beginning early April, in the US and more than 30 other countries.

What Changed — At a Glance
Key facts from Apple’s official March 16, 2026 press release.
What the H2 Chip Actually Does
The H2 chip is the engine behind every major upgrade in AirPods Max 2. Tap each tab to see what changed, and why it matters.
Active Noise Cancellation — 1.5× More Effective
The H2 chip, combined with new computational audio algorithms, makes ANC up to 1.5× more effective than the original AirPods Max. That means less airplane engine noise, fewer commuter train sounds — more space for music, calls or focus.
Transparency mode also received a new digital signal processing algorithm, tuned specifically for H2 and the AirPods Max microphone array. The result is a more natural-sounding ambient pass-through — less of that processed, filtered quality.

Connect via the included USB-C cable and AirPods Max 2 output 24-bit, 48 kHz lossless audio. A new high dynamic range amplifier delivers cleaner sound while preserving the AirPods Max sound signature. Spatial Audio improves instrument localisation, bass accuracy, and mid and high clarity.
Using the USB-C cable, AirPods Max 2 are the only headphones that let musicians both create and mix in Personalized Spatial Audio with head tracking — inside Logic Pro for Mac and other music creation apps. Wireless audio latency is also reduced, making Game Mode on iOS, macOS and iPadOS feel more responsive.
USB-C lossless · HDR amplifier · Logic ProLive Translation — Real-Time, In Your Ears
Powered by Apple Intelligence, Live Translation helps users communicate across languages in person. It requires AirPods Max 2 with the latest firmware, paired with an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone running iOS 26 or later.
Live Translation supports 10 languages: Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional), English (UK), English (US), French (France), German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese (Brazil), and Spanish (Spain). Availability may vary by region.
Apple Intelligence · iOS 26+ · 10 languagesStudio Recording and Camera Remote
Studio-quality audio recording lets interviewers, podcasters, singers and creators capture audio with higher quality and more natural vocal texture. Availability may vary by region due to local laws and regulations.
The camera remote feature lets users press the Digital Crown to take a photo or start and stop video recording in the Camera app — or compatible third-party camera apps — on iPhone or iPad. Voice Isolation uses H2’s computational audio to prioritise voice on calls while blocking ambient noise.

Every feature below is new to AirPods Max. None were available on the original H1-based model. All require AirPods Max 2 with the latest firmware, paired with a compatible device running the latest OS.
Five Finishes — Orders Open March 25
AirPods Max 2 are available in the same five colour options introduced with the 2024 USB-C refresh: Midnight, Starlight, Orange, Purple, and Blue. Tap a colour to see it.
Recycled Materials Across the Board
As part of Apple’s plan to be carbon neutral across its entire footprint by the end of this decade — covering materials, electricity and transportation — AirPods Max 2 include several verified recycled material commitments.
