The newly unveiled Insta360 X5 brings substantial upgrades to an already popular 360° camera line. Released on April 22, 2025, this flagship model builds on its predecessor with larger sensors, improved durability, and AI-powered features that address common challenges for action camera users.

At the heart of the X5 sits significantly larger 1/1.28-inch image sensors – 144% bigger than those in the X4. This hardware upgrade directly translates to better image quality, particularly in challenging lighting conditions where the camera can gather more light. The 8K 30fps video recording capability remains from the previous model, but footage now benefits from enhanced processing through a new Triple AI Chip system.

“X5 redefines 360° cameras by solving creators’ real challenges,” said JK Liu, Insta360’s Founder. “From replaceable lenses to AI-powered low-light shooting, we’ve built our dream camera—rugged enough for adventure, capable enough to produce high-quality footage, and intelligent enough to capture epic moments effortlessly.”

Practical Improvements for Real-World Use

Perhaps the most practical upgrade is the new replaceable lens system. 360° cameras are notoriously vulnerable to lens damage during active use, previously requiring costly repairs. The X5 introduces user-replaceable lenses made from more durable glass, allowing owners to swap damaged lenses themselves.

For underwater enthusiasts, the X5 increases waterproofing depth from the X4’s 33 feet to 49 feet (15 meters) without requiring a special case.

Battery life also sees improvement with a 2400mAh battery (up from 2290mAh), providing up to 185 minutes of recording in Endurance Mode. The camera supports fast charging, reaching 80% capacity in 20 minutes.

New Features for Easier Content Creation

The X5 introduces a practical new “InstaFrame” shooting mode that simultaneously records two video files: a standard “flat” video ready for immediate sharing, and a full 360° video for later editing. The flat video can be set to either maintain a fixed perspective or automatically track the subject.

Audio quality often challenges action cameras, especially in windy conditions. The X5 addresses this with a built-in multi-layer steel mesh wind guard and updated audio algorithms to reduce wind noise and improve sound clarity.

Testing the New Technology

Early hands-on testing by tech journalists confirms the X5 maintains the familiar form factor and intuitive touchscreen interface of the X4. While the updated processing system is supposed to be 140% more powerful, some reviewers noted that tasks like saving HDR images still took noticeable time.

Geoffrey Morrison, who tested the camera, noted: “The X5 seems like an evolution of the X4, which is just fine since that’s the best 360 camera I’ve ever used.”

Pricing and Availability

The Insta360 X5 launched at $549.99 for the standard version, with an Essentials Bundle available for $659.99. This positions it at a higher price point than traditional action cameras like the $349 DJI Action 5 Pro and $399 GoPro Hero 13 Black, though the 360° functionality justifies some of this premium.

The X5 is available through Insta360’s official store, Amazon, and authorized retailers. For content creators and adventurers who need to capture everything around them without missing key moments, the upgrades in durability and image quality make the X5 a notable evolution in 360° camera technology.
