Adobe has rolled out major AI-powered features in its April 2025 update for Premiere Pro, significantly changing how video editors work. The update focuses on making common editing tasks faster and easier while offering new creative possibilities.

Generative Extend: AI That Stretches Video and Audio

The standout feature, Generative Extend, is now available with 4K support and vertical video capabilities. Powered by Adobe’s Firefly Video Model, this tool lets editors make clips longer by generating new frames that seamlessly match existing content.

“We’re so excited to see how the Premiere Pro community uses Generative Extend in 4K and AI-powered Media Intelligence to create stories that capture our imaginations,” said Ashley Still, Senior Vice President at Adobe.

Video professionals can now extend clips by up to two seconds of footage with audio, or 10 seconds of audio alone. This solves a common editing problem: having great footage that’s just a bit too short. Editors can use it to:

  • Hold shots longer for emotional impact
  • Cover gaps in footage
  • Create smoother transitions between scenes
  • Match B-roll to narration timing

For now, using Generative Extend won’t cost extra Firefly credits, though Adobe states this promotional period will eventually end.

Justin Barnes from Versus Creative Studio noted, “Adobe’s new Firefly-powered video tools like Generative Extend have been transformative for our creative and post-production workflows.”

Finding Footage in Seconds with Media Intelligence

Another major addition is the AI-powered Media Intelligence and Search panel. This feature analyzes footage automatically and lets editors find specific clips using natural language.

Instead of manually searching through hours of material, editors can now type phrases like “close-ups of hands working in a kitchen” or “overhead shots of plates of food” to locate relevant footage instantly.

The system also recognizes spoken words, making it possible to search for specific dialogue. All this analysis happens directly on the user’s device without needing an internet connection, preserving privacy.

Filmmaker Ernie Gilbert, editor of A24’s “Opus,” said: “I’m really excited by the AI products that Adobe is developing for filmmakers — especially new features like Media Intelligence, which helps me get to the edit that much faster.”

Breaking Language Barriers with Caption Translation

The update introduces AI-powered Caption Translation, which can automatically translate subtitles into 27 different languages. This feature helps creators reach global audiences without the expense and time previously needed for manual translations.

Color Management Made Simple

Adobe has improved its color management system, making it easier to work with footage from various cameras. The system automatically transforms log and RAW footage into standard (SDR) or high dynamic range (HDR) workspaces without requiring technical knowledge or lookup tables (LUTs).

This means editors no longer have to deal with flat, gray-looking video when importing footage. The system uses industry-standard ACEScct as the working color space, giving editors more control over color grading while maintaining consistency.

Performance Improvements

The update includes overall speed enhancements, with Adobe completely rewriting support for popular video formats. This results in:

  • Up to four times better performance for H.264 files on Apple Silicon
  • Twice as fast processing on Windows machines
  • Hardware-accelerated support for Canon Cinema RAW Light on Apple Silicon
  • Dynamic audio waveforms that visually respond to volume adjustments

Industry Impact

Adobe’s video tools remain the choice of many award-winning filmmakers. Sean Baker, who wrote, directed, and edited the Oscar-winning film “Anora,” said: “Adobe Premiere Pro has been a go-to tool for me because of its versatility and ability to handle everything from quick edits to detailed, complex sequences.”

These new AI features were showcased at NAB 2025 in Las Vegas, signaling their significance within the professional video production community.

Content Transparency

As AI-generated content becomes more common, Adobe is emphasizing transparency. All clips extended with Generative Extend are marked with Content Credentials, which act like a “nutrition label” for digital media, showing where and how AI was used in the creation process.

The April 2025 update of Premiere Pro represents a significant step in integrating AI into professional video editing workflows, focusing on solving real problems editors face daily while maintaining creative control.
